To increase public engagement and develop solutions to a wide range of challenges, São Paulo is invest-ing in building an advanced ecosystem. To this end, two platforms for knowledge inclusion have been established. First is MobiLab, which focuses on innovation in mobility. Among other things, it offers a mentoring program for start-ups that allows them to test their inventions and applications for the ad-ministration. The (011).lab offers space for the testing and development of innovative ideas. It connects people inside and outside the administration who want to realize projects together.

In Sweden, local authorities must ensure a bed in a nursing home for all residents in need. To this end, the operation of nursing homes is often outsourced to public tender, while the infrastructure remains the purview of the local authorities. Selection is based on price and a variety of quality criteria, and continu-ously monitored by the authorities. The operators are fully compensated for their expenses but only al-lowed to charge the standard fees set to those in need of care.

With the goal of reducing energy costs, the town of Gabrovo decided to modernize its street lighting. To this end, a contract was established with a private company. This company assumed long-term respon-sibility for the lighting and invested in more sustainable infrastructure. The city continues to pay the contractor for their services, and thus their investment will pay off in the long term. In return, the city benefits from lower electricity bills, thanks to more efficient consumption.

The New York City Plaza Program was designed to transform underutilized street spaces in the city into local gathering places. Such spaces are transformed in conjunction with nonprofit organizations who operate as contract partners anchored in the relevant neighborhoods. The city provides funding for both the design and transformation of the space. The non-profit organization is responsible for public rela-tions, maintenance, planning, and implementation.

The Club Engage project was founded in South Africa in 2013, in order to care for children outside of school hours. This project brings offerings for both before and after school, as well as vacation time. The added value comes from Club Engage’s collaboration with local schools on whose premises the services take place. These services can be purchased as add-ons by the parents.
