List of Service Models

Open source

With the open source model, the state makes data and source codes available for third parties to use, de-velop, and improve. What is specific to this modelis that those data and source codes may have a mone-tary value, as they are the result of investment. Nevertheless, they are published free of charge.

AtmoSud

France

The French governmental organization AtmoSud created a platform through which measured air quality data, pollution, and the load on the population could be directly obtained as an API and used by private parties. These data are delivered live for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.

Chicago Data Portal

United States

On Chicago’s Open Data Portal, all kinds of data about the city can be viewed. Diagrams and maps can be created directly and entire datasets downloaded for further processing. These datasets are continuous-ly updated. As a result, the portal is also a central basis for open data apps. In 2016 and 2017, Chicago worked with “citizen hackers” to revise the portal and improve its usability.

Object self-service

In the model object self-service, state objects are equipped with sensors that enable certain actions to be triggered on the basis of a sensor measurement. This can range from very simple messages regarding a streetlight (e.g., “This lamp is defective”) to complex evaluations of data.

Proactive bridge monitoring

Norway

In Norway, bridges are continuously monitored by sensors and an IoT solution. This is in addition to regular maintenance and inspection work. If the sensors detect an irregularity, they trigger an alarm and directly order additional maintenance work. In 2021, for example, a problem on the Stavå Bridge was detected purely by sensors, thus preventing an accident.

Waste collection in Barcelona

Spain

Barcelona has distributed networked sensor-equipped waste containers throughout the city as part of its development as a smart city. These continuously measure how full they are and “order” emptying as soon as necessary. In addition, the routes of the garbage trucks have been optimized to empty all full containers as efficiently as possible.

Mass personalization

The mass personalization model uses the possibility of digitization to provide each person or organization with an individualized service configuration. This is typically done by dividing services into standard modules that can be individually combined as desired. For the addressee, this creates the impression that the service has been developed exactly according to their needs.

Coordinate My Care

United Kingdom

The National Health Services in the UK has created a service for people with serious illnesses. With Co-ordinate My Care, patients fill out an online form that is then finalized by a health professional familiar with the person. Once everything is completed, all emergency services have that information available to then, such as special care requests and spiritual and cultural demands.
